Activity Ideas to Do at Home

In this space, I am going to list online and other ideas you might want to explore while you are at home during the school closure.  Please let me know of any ideas you have that should be added to this list!  EVERYTHING listed below is free to access.

General and/or Crazy Fun

Fact Monster - full of activities, games and videos on all subject areas.  American so some content may not be perfect for us but still lots to do.

Khan Academy - daily activities and learning in all subjects by grade level.

Learn how to sword-fight - a guy is offering free sword-fighting lessons via Youtube.  YOU KNOW that I will be doing this.

Math


University of Waterloo Math Games for at Home (Grades 4-12) - printable games each day by grade level that you can play with a brother or sister.

Coding


Scratch - free online coding program that is web-based and super fun.  It has tutorials OR you can join a free online class with an OCDSB teacher each day by using the link below.

Free Coding Lessons through Chromeworks - each day at 10:00 am via Youtube


Language


Audible - free audio books for kids and teens.  Literally hundreds of great books to choose from.  No sign-up required!

Scribd - free for 30 days!!! This site literally has over 10,000 free books, magazines, etc that you can access free for 30 days.  You will find so much to read here! Awesome opportunity.  No need to put in a credit card number - just an email.

Learn to speak Cree - daily lessons by a Cree-speaker where you can learn to speak some Cree.  Cree is a very large Indigenous language group in Canada, mainly in northern Ontario/Quebec and Manitoba/Saskatchewan.

Hogwarts Digital Escape Room - you guys know how I feel about anything Harry Potter.  LOVE IT.  This is a free online escape room that you can do with your family or alone.  I will definitely be doing this with my kids tomorrow!

National Film Board of Canada - Remember when I showed the Log Drivers Waltz (Grade 7 history students last year and this year....)? This is the site that is from.  It is Canada's national film making institute.  There are tons of cool things to watch including cartoons, fictional films, documentaries etc.  My kids and I are watching a couple a day.
